 Chau Gong: Brief Introduction
Crafted from copper-based alloys such as bronze or brass, the Chau Gong, also known as the tam-tam, stands as a fascinating and versatile percussion instrument boasting a rich history and diverse applications. Its shallow cylindrical shape, featuring a slightly concave main surface and an upturned rim extending about 1/2 inch (1 cm), grants it a distinct appearance. The gong’s center spot and rim, coated on both sides with black copper oxide, contrast sharply with the polished surface, creating a visually captivating instrument. Available in sizes ranging from 7 to 80 inches (18 to 203 cm) in diameter, the Chau Gong emits a mesmerizing and resonant sound, its pitch and tone varying depending on the size and playing technique employed, making it an essential element across musical genres and cultural contexts.

 what is a burmese Gong?

The Burmese gong has had a profound influence on other gong types in the surrounding region, particularly in Thailand, leading to their frequent grouping together due to their striking similarities. Among the various types of Burmese gongs, the temple gongs and the triangular-shaped Kyeezee, also known as the ‘spinning’ gong, stand out as the most common. These gongs play significant roles in traditional music and cultural practices, symbolizing a shared heritage and cultural exchange within the Southeast Asian region.
